There are some great memories that we share:

•7:30 am Old Testament classes in the basement of
Bowie Hall.(ZZZZ, sorry Dr. Harris!)
•Geek, I mean Greek Classes with Dr. Gary
McGee.(I know, I should have taken
another year.)
•Music Theory with Winnie Swaim – what a super
music teacher!
•And Acts Class with Opal Reddin - we had real
life application in those classes.
•Revivaltime Choir showed us how important it was
to pray and to wait on the presence of God.
•The miracles of lives changed, we talked about
it in class and experienced it in churches and at the Encounter in downtown
Springfield.
(FYI: The Encounter is where hippies became Jesus People -
a coffee shop before Starbucks.)
Those memories we will always have.

More Memories?
• Remember Spence Jones selling apples?Yelling at you across the campus?
• How about Tempos Choir?The Followers? Or The Couriers?
• John Maracle, a real Mohawk Indian, shooting arrows at his roommate?
(He had trouble finding roommates.)
• David Carr measuring skirts and hair length before chapel?
• Gary McGee’s VW bug on the steps of Welch Hall?
• Who knew that Chuck Wagon would pass Dr. Hortons’s test in Hebrews class?
• Randy Collins – the weekend his girlfriend came from home and the
Chiclets/Feen-a-mint switch?
• Malcolm Pavey running outside of Flower Hall after being covered in
shaving cream and car oil?
• Betty Spade being removed from the RT bus by firemen at the Seattle Space
Needle? (She exited on a stretcher,smiling and waving to Marty Gould. The
next day on the bus, Donnie Morphis told Bro. Mac, I refuse to pray for her! And
he didn't.)
• Dwight Westover praying for his groceries as he brought them into Boyd Hall
from his car – that saved a prayer before supper.
• The Best Donkey Basketball Player? Stan Buford!
• The sound and smile of a real southern girl, playing the piano in the music
hall? Wow! She sings alto, plays the piano and STILL looks good at
conventions!
FYI: I found her the first day of CBC, but it took her quite a while
longer to really hear God.

What Matters Most
What matters most is that we followed the Call of God. Like Eli did for Samuel, someone told us to listen and respond to the voice of God, and we did.

Our Greatest Concern
That should be the focus of our greatest concern. Who is helping the next generation hear the Voice of God and follow His Call?When was the last time you heard or preached a sermon on Following the Call of God?

How will we reach the Millennials with the Good News?
Answer: With Spirit-Filled Millenials who have answered the Call of God!

We are Pentecostal believers and God promised to confirm his Word with signs and wonders.They need to experience the presence of God like we did.Preaching and teaching the Full Gospel – that is what CBC taught us.

CBC = Challenged, Changed and Charged!
(I know that there is no “B” in there, sorry President Crouch)
If you are anything like me, CBC Challenged you, it Changed you and it Charged you! No wonder it means so much to us.

The Really BIG Question
Will you help the next generation follow the Call of God?That is the REAL legacy of CBC.You can help them with sermons, seminars, Sunday school classes, prayers and even with finances. How much does your church support would-be pastors and missionaries?

The challenge before us is to be changed and re-charged with the Call of God.The
Spartans may never again be a logo on a t-shirt… so what?
If Millenials are hearing the Call of God and Answering that Call …. the Gospel goes forward!

It is time to pass on the legacy. Until Jesus comes, we must keep making disciples of every nation. There is still a great work to be done. Whole nations need to hear the Word … there is still room at the cross.
So, let’s take it across the nation and around the world!

Steve sent me a copy of the following letter via e-mail. Thought you might enjoy this. Note; I've left it exactly as it was received no - edits.

Talofa Steven,
My name is Poe Mageo. I live in American Samoa, the most remote US possession (territory) in the South Pacific. Every islander back in the early 70s grew up listening to the amazing sound of the world-famous Revivaltime Choir; we even had songbooks which featured Cyril McLelland's choral arrangements. My father would even buy LP albums of the choir. As a matter of fact, our choir's name in Samoa is Taimi o le Faaolataga--a literal translation for the RT Choir. The program from Springfield was aired locally by the WVUV-AM radio station at 7:30 on Sunday morning; it was sponsored by the local Samoan AOG churches. And at 8:30 am the Mormon's Tabernacle Choir was featured in its Music and Spoken Word program on the same radio station (the only one on island back then). We recall some of the powerful sermons by the late Dr. C.M. Ward and even Dan Batzer. (Dr. Ward visiting our island in the early 80s). My father Rev. Elder Siaosi Ieti Mageo is now the district superintendent of the American Samoa AOG District.

We have been in the ministry at Calvary Temple AOG in Lepuapua village (south of the island) for 46 years. In the early 70s our local AOG district began a radio broadcasting ministry which modeled afther the RT program. As a result, at 12:30(noon) we have the Samoan version of the RT program (that's when our church choir was formed and became to sing McLelland's arrangements.) Believe it or not, we begin the program with "All Hail the Power of Jesus Name" in Samoan.

To make the story short, for years I've tried to find a place where I could buy the songbooks of all the Revivaltime Choir favorites that McLelland had arranged. Do you know where I could buy them from? The last of the RT Choir favorites we performed was the "Then I Met the Master." We even learned "I Love to Tell the Story," "There's a New Song in My Heart," "Sweet Jesus," "In the Still of the Night," "He is the Way (Truth & Life)," "Take the Name of Jesus with You," and many more RT classics. I am a die-hard fan of McLelland's choral arrangements, but the sad thing is most of our sheets are tattered and we need to purchase new songbooks, I just pray that they are not out-of-print. Our Samoan RT Choir just celebrated its 35th anniversary and one of the projects was to do a tribute to honor the original RT Cchoir and McLelland for his brilliant arrangements. Sad to say we couldn't do it because we don't have his music sheets. I remember the songbooks were published by Word Division of Scared Music or something like that. The fact is the RT program and McLelland's arrangements helped bring more people to Christ those days. The truth was we were all saddened when the program from Springfield discontinued. I hope we could still continue it today. You see there's so much history in this remote part of the world with (I hope he's your father) McLelland's witty compositions. I don't know if you are related to himl, but I just found out that he died last year. And if you are, God bless your soul for McLelland's choral arrangements were used by many local churches in American Samoa. I found out your email from the Revivaltime Memories blog. I hope we could continue this dialogue. When I saw the 'Revivaltime Memories' blog, I said, 'Thank God they're still around.' Now you know how effective the RT Choir and its outreach to people like us here in the South Pacific. I tell you there's so much to share with your old members. You can tell them there's a Samoan RT Choir and we're going strong! I could even send you some pictures of our choir. As I'm writing to you, in the background my sister is playing McLelland's arrangment of "Count Your Blessings" (yes, the one that starts with 1...2...3...). We recorded that in the Samoan version in our Vol. 3 recording.Please get back to me for I desparately need to order those old, treasured songbooks which have those wonderful arrangements by McLelland. And please convey my condolences to his family. Let them know that Cyril was very much know in American Samoa. In today's cacophony, Cyril's music still carries that clear melody which shudder sinners when they hear "Room at the Cross."

About a month ago the Iowa District asked me to do the worship for their senior adult ministry retreat. This year is dedicated to dad and his work with Revivaltime. Do you know any former members in the region that would be interested in singing with us on Friday, Oct 2 at the district Camp? Mom showed me 3 boxes of music dad was saving for his next choir clinic. His music will provide some great songs for the event. Gloria Elliot is coming and it would be awesome to have some former members in the choir.

Saw your blog with the pics from General Council. I am new to blogging so was not sure how to leave a message. I do want to say again , how much we appreciated everyone helping at dad's memorial service. We could not have asked for a moer meaningful service.

Do YOU remember what this is? (Envelope size: 2 1/2" X 4")

I have been at my new assignment for just about 2 weeks now. I am on the fourth floor of HG, just down the hall from the old Radio Dept.

After being here a while I needed to find some supplies and was informed about the supply closet. There you find the typical office supply things ... and I found a rather large quantity of these small brown envelopes. No one knows why they are in the closet, just that they have been here for a number of years.Hmmmm.

I see, some of your memories are kicking in! We handled these everytime RT went out on the road and the Radio Department supplied us with funds for lunch. Yes, its the RT Lunch envelopes! We would find $.50 or a dollar and we could then splurge on a cheeseburger from McDonalds. Wow, who would have thought that we'd have any of these leftover?

Hey, BTW, I'm needing to raise some funds for my trip to GC. So .... if you want some of these great little envelopes for your scrap book. Send in your offering to PO Box 70, Springfield, MO. And for an extra offering of $10.00, we could have them signed by C.M. Ward!

RT Reunion - August 3rd at The Rosen Centre!

Yes, we are still planning a special time for all RT members to get together and share laughs. It will take place just ahead of General Council on Monday, August 3rd at The Rosen Centre. George and Cheryl Cope will be our hosts for the 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM event. We hope YOU can attend. We will send along more details ASAP. (This will not conflict with the CBC Reunion.)

FYI: Jan & I are in the process of moving to Springfield. I have just been assigned a new position as Adult Resource Consultant for the Discipleship Ministries Agency. I plan to be at General Council, but at this moment don't have a clue about the possibility of being at our RT Reunion. We wanted to pass along some info to all of our RT friends:

1. Melvin Synder is the man who put together the DVD presentation that was shown at Brother Mac's funeral. He can be reached at rsynder@ag.org. He may know more about audio or video tapes of the actual funeral.

FYI: Steve directed the alumni choir and Bruce played "The Holy City' on his dad's violin. (Many rated it a 2 K Box funeral.)

2. We are still planning a Reunion for all of the RT alumni to attend ahead of GC this year. George and Cheryl Cope have reserved the main GC hotel for Monday August 3. It is an early afternoon event. (Exact details to follow.)

3. If you are planning to attend, we would like to know ahead of time to make better plans. We hope to be able to show the DVD that was shown at the funeral and share memories of Brother Mac and RT tours of yesterday. Your stories and memories are important for all of us to hear!

Please let us know your thoughts on continuing with our RT Reunion plans.

Faith Heroe Graduates!

I have many people who have influenced my life. I am thankful to God for each one.

But today, I want to thank God for allowing me the priviledge of being a tenor in Revivaltime Choir. We were all so blessed to be able to minister while we were in Central Bible College. RT made that happen and Brother Cyril McLellan was always at the helm. He has just passed away - funeral to be held on Tuesday, May 27th at 11:00 AM. Jan & I just arrived in Springfield today (Monday) to be able to attend.

His style of ministry and desire to glorify God came through every arrangement and every broadcast. RT was heard on over 600 ABC radio stations - "Across the Nation and Around the World" (that is just one of the sound bites by narrator Lee Shultz.)

There are over 800 choir members around the world who were influenced by Brother Mac. He made serving God fun while letting us know that quality was never to be sacrificed.

We know that thousands of lives were being changed at that long, long altar. At every concert and every broadcast we were always instructed that eternity was in the balance. And there was always Room at the Cross for another broken heart to be healed, another life to be forgiven.

And while all of that was going on over the radio waves, God was placing part of Brother Mac's heart into each of ours.

Cyril McLellan, "Brother Mac" always loved always remembered.

Denise Power Update

In the process, I found out that Denise Power just had knee surgery and will be unable to be at the funeral.

Now we need Sopranos, Altos, Tenors and Basses. Steve McLellan has even set up a rehearsal time for us at the Central A/G choir room 9:30 AM on Tuesday - just like Brother Mac getting us to practice again!

Steve McLellan just filled us in on the details of Brother Mac's funeral arrangements. There will be a viewing at the Greenlawn Funeral Home from 5PM until 7PM on Monday May 25th. The funeral will be held at Central A/G at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 26th. If you have pictures to share please send them along to our e-mail address tjbougher@bellsouth.net. The family is planning time for pictures during the funeral - they need 300 psi pictures. Steve McLellan just informed us that Hospice has moved Brother Mac to the Critical Care Center in Maranatha. Please keep praying for the family in these difficult moments. We are so blessed to know that our Redeemer lives and death has no victory.

Father - We release Brother Mac into your hands. He has served you here on this side with great honor and we have been privileged to serve along side him.

Our hearts are filled with so many memories of lives changed and churches rejoicing as the bus pulled away after a wonderful service. We have all been a part of a unique ministry that truly affected and changed us. Brother Mac shaped our lives through his service.

We can only thank you for the time we were allowed to sing in the choirs that he led. And should those 10,000 years have time for some choirs to sing, we'd like to put in a special request for Brother Mac to lead another Reunion RT choir to sing "All Hail the Power" .... just one more time. FYI: Brother Beam will tell you just how long that will take. And remind Brother Ward that we won't need any preaching. Just have him tell a story or two.

Oh and should you have another moment to spare, Brother Mac plays a really great arrangement of "The Holy City" on his violin. (But before you let him play, tell him he has to "try out" for King David first!)

Now we pray for Miss Beth, Steve, Bruce and their families. Death is never easy for us. We are so grateful to know that you sent the Comforter and He truly comforts us through these hours.

Holy Spirit we invite you to surround the McLellans in your love and peace. And fill their minds and hearts with the good times of yesterday and the eternal hope for tomorrow.

We thank you for the Hope of Glory that you have placed in our hearts.
We look forward to the great RT Reunion that you have planned.
And ...what a day that will be, the moment we cast our crowns at your feet, and "Crown You Lord of All!"

I just received word through Kasi Jones about Brother Mac. I called and talked with both Brother and Sister McLellan. He is not doing well. The doctors do not know what else to do. Hospice has been notified. It is time to ask God for a supernatural miracle for Brother Mac! Please be in prayer for him. We will keep you posted as to any updates. His voice is weak but his spirit is still strong. And our God is ABLE.

God ... We ask you to touch Brother Mac and perform a creative miracle in his life. We have all experienced your healing power and we know that YOU are the creator. We ask in the name above every name, the name of JESUS for his complete healing. We ask for a new report, one with your signature attached. It was with your blood we were redeemed and by your stripes we are healed. We claim that for Brother Mac. Amen

Hey Tom.
So good to hear from you. Boy does this bring back memories. Carol and I have been in missions for the past 14 years in Japan. Eight and one half in Tokyo and presently we are in Okinawa. Having a wonderful time pastoring a military and international church as well as serving as the Asia Pacific Military Field Rep for the A/G. Please let us know where you guys are and what is going on as well. Also add us to the revivaltimememories.blogspot.com as well. I wonder what it is that now causes our hair to look so white in our pictures. Could it be age?

Here is a short obituary of a RT member. It will come out in this month's E-Newsletter.

Rev. Thomas Roswell Brubaker, Jr. (’53) died October 5, 2008 at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife Emily, a daughter and son and their spouses, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren He was an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God and served as a pastor for over 40 years. He loved music and was a member of the Revivaltime Choir, while a student at Central Bible College.

Help The McLellans get to General Council 2009

We wanted to find a way to allow RT members and others to give to an account so that Bro & Sis Mac can fly to Orlando for GC. CBC has graciously made this possible.

Please read the following e-mail:
If anyone would like to give money toward sending the McLellans to General Council they can send their check to “Central Bible College” On the memo it needs to reference “Revivaltime.” We will put it in an alumni account. When the time comes to pay for this trip we will need to know at least a week or so in advance so we can get checks requisitioned for travel, lodging, etc. It will probably be nice to include enough for some petty cash to take care of food and other incidentals.

If anyone prefers to give with a credit card, the school operator can take the information. Have them call 1-800-831-4CBC and tell the operator they are giving toward the Revivaltime project, the amount they are giving, and their credit card information.

RT Reunion is a GO!

I just talked with Pastor, excuse me Dr. George Cope and he has reserved a room at the Rosen Centre Hotel for the RT Reunion! We hope that everyone will plan to make the trip to Orlando for this August's General Council. We will meet on Monday, August 3, time TBA. More details to follow. Note: This is not a rehearsal and a concert.

Now, we will be looking for people to help with flight and hotel costs for the McLellans. I will check with CBC and HQ to see if there is a way to make these gifts as a donation. We will make the amounts and totals available as we go.

Brother Mac on Wednesday, December 3, 2008

Here is the latest from Brother Mac. He said he was feeling “fair to middlin” I asked him if that was a Canadian saying, he just laughed. (I think he learned that one hangin’ out in Nixie.)

He is not feeling too bad but is still having some problems with his legs swelling during the day. He said he has had some set-backs and his PSA’s are reading much higher than usual.

Note: He is scheduled to have a medical procedure in January.

Due to his leg problem, he has not been practicing his violin – I wish I knew who in Canada to call and report him for his delinquent behavior.

He felt so bad this week, that he missed an opportunity to be in Sister Mac’s traveling choir, they sang in Willard, Missouri without him. He told me that he sings in the Bass section, who knew? He probably stands on the riser right next to Bill Gaither.

FYI: His legs may be compressed in special socks but his humor is still fresh and full of puns.

Keep praying for Brother Mac. He’s 80 but ready for 20 more good ones. Anybody need a great choir clinician? Call 417.833.1727

Hi, Tom!

I ran into your blog when a friend told me to go look at "this thing about Revivaltime alumni". So I did. It was pretty funny to me to see who had that blog. Because I remember you from when I was a kid and you sang in the Go Choir in Des Moines. You were at our house alot. I think I mainly remember you working with my dad on that record album cover, you know, the one with all the yellow and black diagonal lines (or whatever they are!) Really, I dunno how you can joke on any RT covers considering your Go Choir history. : )

But anyway, I was in Revivaltime too, from 1977 to 1979. I still stay in touch with a few friends from CBC days. I sang on the "Revive Us Again" album.

I just wanted to say hi, and let you know how much I enjoyed your site. I think it is wonderful that you all are planning a reunion. It sounds like you all enjoyed the previous ones.

General Council – Orlando August 2009

Plans are still underway to have a RT Reunion on the Monday night ahead of General Council. George and Cheryl Cope are working with a hotel near the convention center for the event.
Here are some of the things that yet need to be tied down:
(1) Round Trip Flights for the McLellans.
(2) Hotel/Lodging for the McLellans.
(3) The RT Reunion Hotel may require an Entry Fee per RT attendee.
(Since we don’t drink – they have to find a way to pay for their room.)
FYI: We do not plan to sell pictures or candy to raise funds,
and CBC is not budgeting for our event.
We do plan to have a way to record your stories and take pictures of all of the attendees.
If a piano is available, we may plan to do some short “Sing-Alongs” of songs we all remember.
(Look out Bill & Gloria – a new DVD is in the planning stages!)
We do want to get Brother Mac on mic and have him answer questions and tell stories.
If you have an other ideas or suggestions, now is the time to send them in.

News from Laurie (Collins) O'Brien

Hi Tom:

Thanks for this great blog. I will take you up on giving an update for those who want to know.

I am the 3rd Collins to sing with Revivaltime Choir, following in my brothers Randy (1970-1974) & Rick’s (1972-1976) footsteps. I met my husband Steve O’Brien (1975-1979) standing next to him on the front row of the choir. So when I made the joke that I was looking for “God’s will for my life, so Will if you’re out there meet me after service” he followed up with the “Hi, I’m Will” joke. We got married in 1977 and continued to both sing in the choir as a married couple, and then when I left after my senior year he continued until his graduation. I worked as a secretary to the Dean, Alan Phillips during that time.

Steve is currently pastor of LifeSpring Assembly of God in Riverside, CA, www.lifespringonline.com and also serves as Chaplain, Lt. Colonel in the Air Force Reserve.

I work as an administrative secretary for the construction department of the Riverside Unified School District (we build the schools).

We have 2 married daughters who live in the area and are expecting our first grandchild in February of next year. I have included a picture of Steve and I from our RT days, and a more current one that you can use if you want (or not).

That’s about it. I will forward the blog link to Randy and Rick and let them update you on their lives.

How do you like the cut up choir effect?

You would think that somebody could have
thought ahead and moved people into the lettering
and out of the cracks?

The guys had white ties - wow, a mob choir!
Those black gloves had secret compartments.
They were holders of kleenex and New Testaments.

See if you can find Brian Rainbow or Jim Ayers?
Even Gaylan Grant is tough to find.
Dwight Westover, Carol Crow and Jim Risner split right
down the middle! And who is the girl right behind
Cheryl (West) Cope? I'll bet her mom was proud of that
album cover. Put it down as the greatest graphic design
of an RT album.

Stories from Dave & Pat Matheny

One Sunday, right before the broadcast, the choir had just concluded praying. Some of us were still praying and slowly coming out of that mood. Brother Ward was talking about having been very sick with "shingles" (I think), and I wasn't listening and said quietly "Lord we praise You," at the wrong time. Some of the guys around me heard it and started laughing, trying to hold it in, which made it worse. They thought I was being funny. Some of the girls in the auditorium from school saw them trying to not laugh, and got to giggling at them, which added to the moment. Brother Ward saw them, lashed out at them, and then turned to the guys in the choir and spoke harshly to them. While I was the cause of the problem, I didn't know what was going on. Later, Brother Mc had a conference with me. It did help me to learn to stay alert on the platform to everything that is going on.

Susie Parks Votes for an RT Reunion

We are currently discussing and preparing the potential details of an RT Reunion at the next General Council in Orlando, Florida. (August 2009.)

Current Thoughts/Plans Include:
1. Meet at a Hotel near GC after service - NOT in conflict with CBC Reunion.
(Our thanks to George & Cheryl Cope for doing the leg work in Orlando.)

2. Have disposable cameras and recorders at each table for us to hear your stories and get updates on what is happening in your lives.

3. This event is NOT a concert. We want to have the time to see and talk to our RT friends.

4. We want Brother Mac to be able to answer questions from the choir.
Maybe even play his violin for us. PA needed. We plan to record it. Video would be even better!

5. Most likely this will be a ticketed event. FYI: CBC is NOT sponsoring this. We will do our best to keep the cost at a minimum.

6. We would like to introduce every choir member and where they live. Via video would be wonderful! Maybe we can Skype this for people who can't attend?

7. We would like to gather the names of the choir members from each album. We plan to have a copy of the albums and a sign up sheet by each one.

8. We may get some of our keyboard people to help and we'll sing a few favorites from the past.
Look out Bill Gaither - RT Homecoming is about to record!
Where are Brother Beem and Lee Shultz when you need them?

June Update on Brother Mac

Brother Mac is currently right in the middle of a violin lesson.
Wouldn't you love to have your grand kids taking lessons from Brother Mac?
Maybe we could make lessons available via the internet?
How about it Mark, Marty, Dawn, Kasi, Dave, & Leilani ... could we add Piano & Organ lessons too?

Back to reality, Bro Mac informed me that he is doing pretty well. He does have a swollen right leg and he is going through some therapy to control the swelling. He wears a special radiant sock to help too. I'm sure he will tell us that it helps him to "Radiate the Gospel".

Let's keep praying for Brother Mac. (His health and his humor.)

Wardrobe Malfunction

RT rehearsal around 1952, as told by Dawn Crabtree:

On this particular day, there was a whole lot of commotion happening in the risers, much to the dismay of our director. The problem? - Brother Mac had a wardrobe malfunction! And no one would dare tell him, the choir just snickered throughout the rehearsal. Until finally, Ross Weise took him out of the room, and explained the problem to Brother Mac. Returning red faced, the director returned with everything back to normal.

Update on Brother Mac – He had a good report from his family doctor and will receive more info from a recent evaluation this Friday. He is feeling really good today. Let’s keep praying for him. He is looking forward to an RT Reunion Event at GC – August 2009.

Hello, how might I get one or more of these CDs? I was remembering tapes (cassette? reel-to-reel?) of the choir that we listened to when I was a child on the mission field in Africa in the 60s-70s. I remember my mother loved the choir, especially one tenor soloist. She is 74 now and I am 48, and I think it would be so fun to get this music for her to hear again. We had AG missionary friends, the Corbins, and I believe Mrs. Corbin played piano for this choir at one time? Do you know them?

Lori - It was great to hear from you! And yes, Ed & Sonja are good CBC friends of ours, but I don't remember either Ed or Sonja in RT. Anybody out there remember Ed & Sonja in choir?

Yes, Marty Gould is alive and well. Gaylan “Rockford” Grant found him for us! I spoke with both Gaylan and Marty today.

It was great to reminisce and hear updates about Marty and Roberta. Marty was the Organist for RT on 10 different tours. Roberta came into Marty's life soon after the Space Needle event. They will be married 35 years!

Marty promised to send in some of his RT stories via the blog. He also claims to have the complete collections of RT “33 1/3 Albums” – try explaining that to your grandkids! He is trying to photograph the covers for us. We will try to get those covers posted soon on the blog.

The Day We ALMOST Visited the Seattle Space Needle.

On choir tours, we spent very little time on things away from the concert itself.

For instance - I remember going to Washington D.C. and having to run into the memorials, take pictures and run back to the bus. (Whew! I’m still tired.)

On this particular trip we were in Seattle, WA. Brother Mac planned a special day that included time to visit the Space Needle. We were all pretty pumped to be able to do something off the normal schedule.

Upon arriving at the very base of the needle, we were told to quickly get off of the bus and a Fire Truck and an EMT crew showed up within minutes. Who knew Betty Spade had been ill on the bus?

For those of you who didn’t know, Betty had a thing for Marty Gould our organist. (This thing was all one way – poor Marty.) So, we waited outside the bus and watched as 6 or 7 firemen and EMT guys went onto the bus and eventually they loaded Betty on some kind of stretcher and carried her off the bus. (Later we were told that they removed some tight under garments and that she was hyperventilating.)

As the stretcher went by Marty, somehow Betty drew enough strength to lean up and wave at Marty as she went off in the ambulance.

Well, so much for going up the Space Needle. Our time was all up! So, we loaded back on the bus and headed back to the church in just enough time to change and warm up. Thanks Betty!

That night at the church went as planned except, Betty had a solo in the “Sermon in Song” and because of her illness Debbie Florence was prepared and was ready to fill in for Betty.

By now Betty had returned to the church and was lying on a pew – looking really puny and exhausted. She stayed there UNTIL it was time for her solo and miraculously, right before that time came, she rose from the dead walked over to the mike and sang as if nothing had happened, went back and laid down on the pew.

Can you tell Betty pushed a lot of buttons that day?

The next day, we had our bus devotions and testimonials, followed by the prayer request time. Betty was on the list to be prayed for, Brother Mac asked Donnie Morphis- our choir Vice President, to pray for her …. He refused!

It was one of those moments when all of the air went out of the bus.
Brother Mac turned a little red in the face, cleared his throat and went on with other business.

BTW: On that day, I don’t remember anybody praying for Betty Spade.

Lessons Learned at Altar Time

It was the Spring Tour of 1971. We headed off to Iowa and then Eastward. We actually went to Des Moines, my home town and we got to sing a special concert at my old high school – Hoover High. We couldn’t really witness during the concert, but many of the choir members were able to answer questions one on one with students and share the gospel afterwards. I even taught RT our school song and we sang it to the HHS crowd. On that song they sang along with us.

The trip landed us somewhere in Ohio. My tour assignment was to pitch our now infamous color picture. You know the one with the Natural, Fake Wood Border. You can find your own copy by going back to the December 15, 2007 RT Blog. (Click on "Older Posts")

Remember? … we sold those pictures to help the choir members with toothpaste and other essentials. That assignment gave me the freedom to leave the altar area early and head to the back to be ready to sell the pictures.

Well, being the discerning freshman that I was, I noticed a man always looking up during the altar call. He seemed to be nervously watching as kids were coming forward to be prayed for. Brother Mac had already asked for those who needed Jesus to come forward, followed by his question, “How many of you know that if you died today, you would go to Heaven? Put your hands up.” I noticed, this man responded to neither one of Brother Mac’s questions.

I knew what I needed to do, forget selling pictures, this man needs Jesus! I slid in between some folks to be able to sit down in the pew right beside him. I began to tell him how I noticed that he didn’t raise his hand and that Jesus wanted to change his life today. He tried many times to interrupt me, but I was headed for the sale. It seemed his wife was not as serious about the effort that I was making. She nudged him at first but was almost shaking as I pressed forward with my sale.

This guy wouldn’t accept Jesus, it amazed me. He kept interrupting me telling me who he was. I told him it didn’t matter who he was, Jesus would take him with all of his flaws and forgive him today.

All of this time the choir was aware of my efforts. Many of them knew who this guy was.

I kept trying to get this guy to pray the sinners prayer after me.

Finally he got through to me. He was the D-Cap AKA A/G Youth Director for the state of Ohio. He was watching the kids because he had been praying for so many of them. I had just tried to get T. Ray Rachels saved.

I don’t know about Brother Rachels, but I quickly melted to the floor and slid back to selling pictures.

Hey you two,

I have thoroughly enjoyed the RT blog!

I had forgotten about the after the broadcast filing down to those front rows for the “offering!” I do remember Mrs. Ward (Dor-o-thy) sitting near the front with “the look” if there was any sound from a child.

The “incident” you spoke of ….knowing Ernie White he was enjoying every moment of “someone else” getting in trouble, rather than himself, by CM! We were gone at that time, but I’d put Ernie at the top of the list!

Hope you both are doing well! I hope plans are coming together for an RT reunion at the next General Council!

Bro Mac Medical Update

Brother Mac will have another test tomorrow - February 28th at 11:30 AM. Please be praying with us for a great report.

Bro Mac reports that procedures are ongoing but there is evidence of improvement. PTL! He says he is in much better shape today than 2 weeks ago.

APB - TWO CHARACTERS!

It was a typical RT Sunday evening. We all road the bus from CBC down to the HQ chapel to practice and record our radio broadcast. You remember the routine. We would rehearse, pray and then Brother Beam would start the clock and off we’d go with “All Hail the Power”. When the proper time came Brother Beam would cue C. M. Ward and he would move to the pulpit and wait for the sign to start preaching.

Seems like we produced a live broadcast and then a recorded broadcast. Everything seemed so normal that night… to us. Oh, there was the added benefit of some folks visiting from my home church in Des Moines. Witnesses! Ugh!

Something happened that dreadful Sunday night that really surprised us and haunts us to this very day.

After the radio broadcast, the choir all filed down as usual, into the audience to hear some final words from Brother Ward - remember? ... that’s when he would take a seed offering for the broadcast.

That unusual night, Jim Ayers (now pastor in Salt Lake City, Utah and Assistant Superintendent of the Rocky Mountain District) happened to be standing by me in the loft and then sat down by me on the edge of the middle isle in the chapel.

We both were watching, as Brother Ward got very excited and baptized a lady on the front row with some holy saliva. (He was well known for his ability to sprinkle the front row when he preached.)

Even after the baptism, the lady did not budge. She sat motionless, frozen in place, until Brother Ward moved over to another section. Then she quickly got her hanky out of her purse and rubbed her hanky all over her face, drying off as best she could. Jim and I chuckled at the lady. It really was funny. Most of the audience saw it too and laughed with us.

I confess ... It still sounds funny!

Well, at that very moment Brother Ward turned and looked in our direction and said,
“YOU TWO CHARACTERS HAVE BEEN MESSING AROUND ALL NIGHT!”
Jim and I, in sync turned around to look who was behind us, causing Brother Ward to get so upset. Looking behind us, was not what Brother Ward expected, he moved even closer and was then looking right at us. That’s when he turned up the heat. We had no choice but to take his tongue lashing. It was a very embarrassing moment for both of us. At the end of that broadcast time, Brother Mac picked up his violin and headed out of the chapel very quickly.

FYI: On that particular night, we had not been up to anything out of the ordinary, really! I know that most of you would agree that on other occasions, C.M. could have been right on target. But on that night, with people from home and others looking on, we took the heat for somebody. Jim got so scorched, he was ready to resign from the tenor section.

We really don’t know what really took place.

CSI – we could really use your help!

I do remember that Donny Morphis, Dwight Westover and Ernie White were up on those risers too. Maybe C.M. just misplaced his madness that night?

No one ever “fessed up” (I learned that phrase living down south) to being the real culprits.

Now Dwight Westover has gone on to heaven, only Donny or Ernie or____? knows the truth.

This is The Moment of Truth!
Is there anyone out there who will tell the truth?

Consider this an APB (All Points Bulletin) for Two Characters last seen in 1971 during an RT Broadcast.

Kasi Jones has a Question RE: Maury Stout

I was shocked to read in the CBC Alumni Newsletter that Maury Stout died last November. He was such a character and, oh, the stories I could tell about him, Dave Franklin and Ron Crawford on RT tours!

I found Maury's obituary online at

A GOOD Report!

Brother Mac received his test results and passed with flying colors.
His bone scan showed no cancer and his cat scan showed what the Doctors believe to be a benign tumor in the liver. PTL!
He is still taking medicine to treat the cancer in his bladder, but is feeling well.
Bro Mac says he plans to send in a story or two. Watch for those on the RT Blog soon.

News from Herb & Eve Peak

Hello Tom and Jan,

Herb found your site through the CBC Alumni Newsletter and sent it to me. I was going to go to through the blog to post my comments but decided I needed to do that on our home computer …I still need my job. I saw your email address when I went to the revivaltimememoriesblog so thought I would send our hi via your email. We had not heard about Cyril’s illness so I was checking for an update on that.

We have been in Tennessee since 1991 ….long time! We pastored the A/G church for almost six years. During that time we purchased a Baldwin dealership here in town from a sweet gentleman who wanted to retire. We thought it would make us a good “retirement” sideline, but after 9-11, the economy taking a nosedive, we had to shut it down which took a great toll on us in many ways. Mostly financially. During that time we resigned our church after a time of burnout and Herb some major health issues. In 2000 we spent a year at the A/G church in Manteo, NC, over the bridge from Nags Head . One of our SC pastor friends is there. Herb helped renovate their sound system, worked with their music, etc. We would have stayed on but living on the beach was quite expensive along with the fact our children were still in Bristol. At this point of our life we wanted to be where they were, if God was pleased with that.

We came back to Bristol in July of 2001 and after a long chain of events, a story much to long to unfold, we are now pastors of a Christian Church that for the 25 years prior to us has had an A/G pastor; he also married us in ’69. If you can follow this ….that pastor also was pastor of Glad Tidings when Herb’s family moved here in the mid-60’s. So, to say the least it was ironic to come back to the church Herb ‘s parents were/are members.

It pulled out from the Disciples of Christ some years ago, is very eclectic in attendance, still holds to some traditional structure such as communion every Sunday but we have come to enjoy that part of the service. The pastor before us was a bit more “traditional” so we’ve taken the church some steps forward in more open worship, of course with some challenges but also with great acceptance.

Our three sons found Bristol girls who between them all have given us three grandsons (10, 8 and 5) and almost two years ago our first granddaughter. Scott is 36, Marketing President for the Wachovia bank here, Todd works for a private local business as well as serves as Herb’s associate/worship leader, whatever dad needs. And, Christopher is in management with Pepsi. We are thankful the boys have been able to be with us and share in our ministry.

It is nice to know other people enjoy “looking back” through roads traveled. I thought I might be the lone ranger on that one, or it came with getting ready to turn 60 …..ugh.

Test Results come in Thursday - January 24

I talked with Brother Mac - he is feeling good and shared this information:
He will get his test results back on Thursday and have a consultation with his doctor for the next step. We should know what that is, by Friday the 25th.
(We didn't talk long - it was time for a violin lesson.)
So choir, we must continue to pray for a Miracle!

Someone asked me "When are you OUT of RT?" There is a simple answer, once you're IN, only Heaven can get you OUT. And I understand that there are risers being set up now, for a very special broadcast ... Across the Heavens and Around the Throne. Brother Beam is there getting everything prepared. C.M. Ward is waiting in the wings.

FYI: I also spoke with Darlene Betzer, I know that Fort Meyers is praying today for Bro. Mac. We hope to hear from Pastor Dan Betzer via the Blog in the very near future!

The car is a '72 Nova - now somewhere in Colorado.
This RT suit was last seen in Sri Lanka.
It had a flap button pocket, with a belt in the back, and flair pants.
Is this starting to sound like an ad in TravelSmith?
(The guy in the picture sure needs a haircut.)
Notice the 2 tone shoes - BTW predating Carman.
Does anyone have a picture of this choir?
